When we found out we were having a boy I was seriously SO relieved! Truly! It might sound a little ridiculous - but of all things baby, the one thing I hadn't really loved was girl nurseries. For real. As soon as we found out we were pregnant I started pinning and was blown away by all the boy nurseries I was drawn too.
The one thing I knew I would want to do is a gallery wall over the changing table. I just love collecting art and finding pieces that will work well together. Plus, I just really like gallery walls and have one in almost every room in the house. So, with this one I started with the mirror, found lots of great pieces from Savers (yep, most of these pieces are thrifted) and the one of kind print created by Laura Firestone Design! I was listening to Ellie Goulding's version of Elton John's 'Your Song' and fell in love with the lyrics 'how wonderful it is now that you're in the world." Literally started tearing up and thought, those are the words I will want to see when I am in his nursery at all hours of the night.
So I was pretty excited with Laura Firestone Design reached out to me to create something for the nursery and I knew exactly what I'd want it to be. She created some options for me and we ultimately decided on the print above. I absolutely loved it! And it was so fun working with Laura Firestone Design on this project and feel like this print brought the whole gallery wall together. I loved getting to know her through this process and wanted you all to get to know her too! Also save 15% off on her Etsy shop with code SOPHISTICAITED now through Oct. 1st!
When did you start designing?
I graduated college in 2010 with a degree in Graphic Design, and began my journey out in the corporate world. It wasn't until 2013 when my sister got engaged and asked me to help with all of her wedding designs that I started branching out and designing on the side. I realized that my true passion wasn't designing for corporate companies under their brand guidelines but really to have the freedom of using my own personal designs/creations with inspiration from my clients.
What is your favorite part about designing?
My favorite part about designing is that it allows me to have a creative outlet to express myself. It gives me this sense of freedom to just take what I have in my head and express it however I truly feel will work for that specific design.
What inspires you the most when you design?
What inspires me the most when I design is being able to be myself and feel that I can really try anything in a design, there is no "wrong" way. I feel that I can go outside the box. Go big or go home.
What pushes you to be better everyday?
What pushes me to be better everyday is knowing that this is my dream and I'm not going to quit. My ultimate goal is to get out of the corporate world and to be able to help people have the wedding of their dreams with the stationery they want and to be able to afford it. Or to be able to design their house knowing that custom designs can be affordable.
How are do you know when you are finished with a project?
Sometimes, I feel like I am never finished with a project. You can always adjust, add or edit something. I rely a lot on my clients for something like this. I always tell them the biggest mistake they can make is to not be truthful with me. My biggest accomplishment is knowing that I delivered what my client truly wanted.
What other ways do you use your imagination?
I definitely enjoy looking at lifestyle photography of newborns, weddings, family shoots, etc. I've always wanted to get into photography but haven't necessarily had the time or inspirational subjects to drive me to get that passion going. I'm so excited to have this baby girl to give me the inspiration and drive to take more pictures and to learn more about photography. I feel like she would be a great subject to start to learn on!
Now that you're going to be a mom, how does that inspire you?
Knowing that I'm going to be a mom has really given me that extra push. I've always known that this is my dream but daily life can get in the way sometimes. I know that I want to be a role model for my daughter showing to her that you need to live your dreams no matter how far away they might seem to be. You should never stop trying in life for what you truly want. My ultimate goal is to be the best mom to her that I can and be able to provide her with everything to achieve her future goals.
Where are you from?
I am born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri
Where do you live currently?
Currently live in Kirkwood, Missouri
What advice do you have for others that are wanting to design?
Never give up. Continue to look at other designers for inspiration. There will always be a million other designers out there and some will be better or worse than you, but you can never let that get in the way of your passions and dreams. Stay confident in yourself.
